We’ve helped keep town centre vibrant

12:23pm Friday 27th August 2010

WITH the series of ‘Fridays are high days’ in the High Street coming to a close with the 1940s Tea Dance this Friday, I wanted to write and thank all the people who have come to enjoy our community events in the High Street.

We’ve had very positive feedback both from the people of Wycombe, visitors to the town and from local traders who have supported the events we’ve been putting on.

Over the past months, the High Wycombe Town Centre Partnership has been working with a whole range of local organisations and individuals to help to keep the town centre vibrant and a place which local people and visitors can enjoy.

Over these months, I’ve come to appreciate the passion, loyalty and enthusiasm which we have in the town –and I’ve seen the positive support local traders and local community groups have given to our work.

There is a core of local independent traders, national retail chains, market traders and community groups who work passionately and give us their time and talent to help us in our work to support the town centre.

Visitors to the High Street may have seen the creative work going on at the Little Market House to paint the panels screening the current restoration work around this historic building. I’d like to thank the community groups including Wycombe Youth Action, Misfits and Lucy de Rojas who’ve come up with such original ideas and have given up their time to come and paint.

For me, Little Market House is a symbol of our town’s rich market tradition and our historic past. It was after all the heart of the market trade.

Now, each Friday, young local artists are painting the panels which surround it with artwork that celebrates our town and looks forwards to the future.

In the shorter term, over the coming months we’ll be doing more work to bring events such as Continental and Speciality markets to the town to complement our historic regular Charter Market.
