Road traffic was far louder than Eurostar

RECENTLY you published an article about a site visit to the HS1 project, by opponents to the possible HS2 project.

I have an interest here, as 3 years ago I was employed as the site based Safety Manager for the construction of the CTRL Singlewell Maintenance Depot at Gravesend in Kent (shown in your photographs).

Part of my duties was to take noise measurements in Henhurst Road, and I would stand with my noise meter on the the grass verge just outside the gardens of the nearby houses.

What was endlessly apparent was that it was normal car, van, motorbike, tractor and lorry movements that were responsible for the peak noise levels, with the A2 at certain times being responsible for the major background noise level.

The sound level of the Eurostar trains passing in a cutting / under the Henhurst Road CTRL railway bridge about 100m away, was considerably lower than that of the normal road traffic.

In addition, I had an office & training room in portable buildings in the site compound on Henhurst Road which was closer to the CTRL than the houses across the road; while I could hear the Eurostar trains passing they did not affect my work in any way.

It is like banging your head against a brick wall *huge sigh*.
Mr Hooper, no one is denying that the HS2 is more noisy and less environmentally friendly than traffic.
What we are saying and will continue to say is that we do not want our wonderful Chilterns AONB being destroyed for something that is not even going to benefit the county of Bucks.

What people who accuse local residents of being "Nimby's" about the HS2 have failed to acknowledge that most of us who are affected by this monstrous HS2 line have CHOSEN to live in the Chilterns. By that, I mean I have chosen to make the most significant investment of my life by buying a beautiful home here some 5 years ago. Every penny I had saved over the years has gone into this house. Had I, and others like me, CHOSEN to buy a home in a different area, for a lower price, and with an ensuite railway line we would have done so. We did not.

I could not afford anything like this house in London and I cannot live further out because of my work. I am not interested in moving to Birmingham even if I can get into London quicker.

My home is a Grade 2 listed building that I cannot even PAINT in a different colour because it is rightly protected by conservation laws. And yet this government thinks it's OK change the whole area dramatically because some other parts of Europe have a high speed network and they don't want to UK to be left out.

If the government goes ahead with HS2 it will be a form of abuse - abuse of authority and power. And I think that the case would get a good hearing in the European Courts of Human Rights. I certainly will take it there.

Lorraine - there is nothing wrong with protecting your way of life. I agree with you and interestingly all the people who scream "Nimby" are people who will not be affected by the HS2 and who live in the middle of High Wycombe FGS.
It would be a complete tragedy not only for people like yourselves but for all the plants, insects and animals who will have their natural habitat ripped away by man's need for speed and greed.

Mr Hooper, Health & Safety Officianado to the Hard of Thinking and major shareholder in HS2 Ltd.
-
Exactly what point are you trying to make?
-
Are you suggesting that we should be grateful that it's going to be a High Speed railway for long distance commuters that will be raping our AONB and quality of life, rather than a motorway?
-
Decisions, decisions. Shall I stick rusty hot needles in my eyes, or in my veins.
-
Have you ever read 'Roger Irrelevant' in Viz?
