Road traffic was far louder than Eurostar

RECENTLY you published an article about a site visit to the HS1 project, by opponents to the possible HS2 project.

I have an interest here, as 3 years ago I was employed as the site based Safety Manager for the construction of the CTRL Singlewell Maintenance Depot at Gravesend in Kent (shown in your photographs).

Part of my duties was to take noise measurements in Henhurst Road, and I would stand with my noise meter on the the grass verge just outside the gardens of the nearby houses.

What was endlessly apparent was that it was normal car, van, motorbike, tractor and lorry movements that were responsible for the peak noise levels, with the A2 at certain times being responsible for the major background noise level.

The sound level of the Eurostar trains passing in a cutting / under the Henhurst Road CTRL railway bridge about 100m away, was considerably lower than that of the normal road traffic.

In addition, I had an office & training room in portable buildings in the site compound on Henhurst Road which was closer to the CTRL than the houses across the road; while I could hear the Eurostar trains passing they did not affect my work in any way.
