Slim down councils and save money

WITH council elections coming in May next year, will district councillors give us a real political choice and show us why we need all 60 of them in the current economic climate (or not)?

The district’s capital budget drops dramatically next year, so there is less call to commission expensive reports such as plans to re-site Adams Park, bus interchanges and the like.

Managing the sports, leisure facilities, and council housing stock in the district will very soon be completely hived off to the private or charitable sector. Controlling new house building will be less critical now that central government targets are to be relaxed, and anyway, there’s no more space! We already have parish councils to give us a sense of community, so perhaps now is the time to have a real debate about the merits of a unitary authority for Bucks.

We can all think of vital services that could be saved if governance was slimmed down and money redirected.

You could get rid of the WDC Standards Committee for starters. Complete waste of space. Have they ever upheld a complaint from a member of the public against a Parish Councillor?

I'm sure WDC SC will back any Council Chairman who invents completely unfounded complaints against a Councillor who opposes her (or his) plans. But that's not really what we, the public, pay our council tax for, is it?

Lets not forget that useless Quango Community Impact Bucks with several staff and a Rural Enabler whose job it is to find suitable people for cheap housing. They need to be on WDC's waiting list anyway so whats the point of CIB? 250k saved.

Parish councils who spend over £20.000 for a contractor to maintain the garden of rest. Approximately £14.000 more for myriad contractors to cut grass, hedges, trees etc. and thats on a part time basis.

We are told we need to watch every penny so BCC could make a start with the above suggestions.
