Thanks to everyone for our Jubilee joy

I WOULD like to take this opportunity in thanking so many local people who made the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Booker Common such a success and enjoyable event.

There was something for everyone there, dog shows, beer and Pimms tent, raffle, tombolas and local interest groups, as well as a small but perfectly formed arena which provided a welcome performing space for dances and musical displays, culminating in a local rock band Teaser playing an hour’s set on the back of a lorry as a stage... even the sun came out and shone! I am old enough to remember the ‘glory days’ when Booker Common put on this sort of show each year, (August Bank Holiday I seem to remember), which used to include a gymkhana and penny arcade games.

There was the same sense of community last week as I felt all those years ago...

Talking to the chairman of the Hall’s committee I understand that the Memorial Hall is donating the proceeds of the day to charity and the whole event was the Hall’s way of thanking the community around it. It was certainly well attended, with friends, young and old, meeting up and a wonderful family day out. This morning [last Sunday June 3] I’ve walked past the Common and there’s not a scrap of litter anywhere to be seen, so thank you too for the thoughtful folk who cleared the Common so efficiently afterwards. Only the lorry remains parked, proving to me that yesterday wasn’t just a pleasant dream... it really happened! Thank you Booker Memorial Hall!!

ON behalf of all the Wooburn residents who attended the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the Green last Sunday [June 3], I should like to offer a big ‘thank you’ to the organisers, the Wooburn Residents’ Association, and all their generous sponsors. It was very well organised, and the turnout splendid, which must have been gratifying after all the effort which had gone into putting on the event. Everyone enjoyed it, so well done! And again, many thanks.

WHAT a dreadful grey and rainy day for the celebration of our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday 3rd June BUT here in Earl Close we carried on regardless and had a splendid time. I just wish to thank all the younger people in the Close for taking the time to put up the marquee and bunting. The marquee was tastefully decorated, the tables groaned with home-cooked food and the music was groovy, the lighting subtle not to mention a rather decent selection of drinks both alcoholic and not so! It was wonderful to see the younger generation stepping up to the mark and carrying on where we ‘oldies’ have had to stop because of the physical effort required to put up the decorations. I have to say a big thanks to everyone in the Close for making a wonderful day momentous. What a great spirit to celebrate our noble Queen, long may she reign over us.

Marvellous, why not do it more often, not just for a jubilee?
