God bless heroes who helped win the war
11:00am Monday 9th July 2012 in Your Letters
NOT before time, a memorial has been built, and opened by her Majesty the Queen to commemorate the endeavour of Bomber Command to help win the war, 1939 – 1945. It is a belated acknowledgement of the sacrifice these young brave men, undertook to bring this War to a years end.
A standard tour of crew consisted of 30 ops. A completed tour was something to celebrate in the squadrons locally. In my local, Red Cross Knight, Temple End on a Saturday night, war over, a friend’s older brother, a pilot, Bomber Command, would join us later on, for a pint and a game of darts. He was a hero for me, an unsung hero.
I made two subscriptions to build this memorial, for the memory of Doug and his crew who survived, the 55,000 killed out of 125,000 who served in these bombers. God Bless them.
