Are they trying to deter shoppers from town?

I WONDER if the company who run Eden are as draconian when running their other car parks – or whether they are deliberately attempting to deter shoppers from coming to High Wycombe.

Last Wednesday I parked in Eden. There were several people waiting to pay. I knew I was close to two hours so I decided to leave the queue and take the lift to the first floor. There was one person by the pay station so by the time I got my card in I was ONE MINUTE late.

The machine charged me £2.50 – it added 70p for one minute!

I spoke in to the ‘Help’ speaker saying I was one minute late and explained why. A jovial voice (probably an ex parking meter warden, or clamper) said: “That’s right, have a nice day!”

What does the writer of this letter want Eden to do? If they set the system to allow people an extra 5 minutes on every hour then they'd still get moaners complaining that they arrived at the machine after 2 hours and 6 minutes, and if parking were charged by the minute then there'd be even more complaints from people who've had to wait at the machines. Pretty much every car park in the country operates in the same way, so the title of this letter is just daft: if people are driven away from Wycombe by this then where are they going to go? Reading? Oxford? Slough? The car parks in all of those places work in the exact same way

Bad luck.
That's undoubtedly happened to lots of people.
It's very annoying.
.
But yes, the bottom line is that High Wycombe does not want any motorists to visit.
.
So I don't.

In the past I worked in an almost entirely male environment. Often there would be little disagreements and unprintably obscene insults would be exchanged - ‘who you calling a f**** c**** - I’m not a f**** c**** - you’re one of them – no I’m not …’ and so on. One colleague found it very funny when men like this were arguing – he used to giggle silently and point out the source of the voices to me when some choice insult had been made or replied to. I used to disapprove of this and regarded the mentality of the people who were arguing as just something to be deplored.
The exchanges in the BFP are not usually phrased in profane terms but sometimes their indignation reminds me of the filthy exchanges I used to hear in the days just mentioned. Perhaps I am growing more cruel but, apparently like ‘Dr Truth’, I find them comical and I have started to put voices – bored, reasonable, angry or exhortatory, male or female, to many posts (‘ivor’ I imagine with a voice and attitudes like the ones in ‘Carry on Films’ or like Captain Peacock in ‘Are you being Served?’ but with a bit of Sid Kite’s voice thrown in – ivor’s attitudes don’t resonate with anyone more modern than that). I imagine the BFP posters as people arguing in person – the ones that make me smile are furious mothers writing in to defend some enormous hooligan who gets pleasure from harassing grown-ups, saying their little 14 or 15 year olds are good boys and victims of the people whose lives they are making difficult.

Some months ago I linked a series of sometimes indignant blasts and counter blasts in the BFP about a tree being blown over in Marlow, to Facebook and one or two people from foreign countries said they thought it was funny as well.

No Dr Truth – I don’t think you are the only one.
