How much have these banners cost taxpayer?
12:00am Monday 30th July 2012 in Your Letters
FORGIVE me if I am wrong but I thought we were in stringent financial times. If that is the case whose bright idea was it at BCC to have made up all these “Celebrating Buckinghamshire” banners that seem to have sprung up all over the place?
How much has that cost us the council taxpayer? Or are they a planned distraction from the appalling state of the roads they are hung over to make us look up to the banner and not down to the next pot hole?
However I think that we the Wycombe residents and WDC have missed an Olympic related issue, and here I dive back to the 1908 Games and the man who drove the British bid to host and run the games, William Henry Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough, our own first Olympic medalist.
He was also President of the Thames Conservancy Board from 1904 to 1937, the London Chamber of Commerce, and the Royal Agricultural Society, amongst many others.
He was High Steward of Maidenhead, and lived at Taplow Court and was also appointed High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1889. Now it might not be the origin of the naming of Desborough Castle but a large part of the town bears his name so why are we ignoring it?
