Let the grass grow

RECENT letters have rightly highlighted how certain public spaces and gardens are making the district ‘a nicer place to live’.

Wouldn’t it be great if far more publicly-managed land had interest and colour, rather than boring short grass mown to within an inch of its life?

Why not leave some areas unmown to give wild flowers a chance to bloom and seed? Even plant some wild-flower meadows? That way we would get beauty and interest for us humans, as well as major benefits for our hard-pressed bees and other wildlife. And it can be cheaper too!

We understand a new WDC contract for grounds maintenance is being negotiated; surely an ideal time to introduce a fresh and progressive approach.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The grass verge on the left hand side of Holtspur Lane in Wooburn Green (on the route upwards) has been mown in this fashion in the past - allegedly in case it affects the vision and driving ability of drivers. It's difficult to imagine any circumstances in which this piece of grass could affect anybody's vision and I have always thought it was a marvellous repository of beautiful Chiltern native species with names from earlier centuries in the history of the English language.

I should have said this in the last post but since the road was reconstructed on its present alignment 40 years ago it has been re-colonised by native flora and fauna – badgers, foxes, rabbits, bird cherry, yews, dandelions, bladderwort and others.

If I were a teacher and the car park at the top of the hill was open I would take a class there to see what they could see.

It's not the only place like that round here either.

All grass verges with displays of flora and fauna would be beautiful. Poppy's and Bluebell's anyone? Of course, by doing that you not only make it much more attractive, maybe the council could save mine on cutting it all the time!
