IN recent weeks we have had the National Audit Office reporting that much of the data used to claim that HS2 will bring economic growth to the regions was out of date and that there is a “lack of clarity” around the strategic case for the line, and then get the government’s own Major Projects Authority coming out saying that the HS2 project is “...in doubt, with major risks or issues apparent in a number of key areas...”.

It is disappointing that local MPs Steve Baker and Dominic Grieve only abstained, rather than voted against, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill (BFP May 24). They have spoken of alternative ways of redefining marriage, but whatever one’s preferred system, be it civil union, civil partnerships (c.p.), or secular marriage with both same-sex and religious options added on top, the plain fact is that marriage is being altered into something it never was.

I’m increasingly fed up with the condition of our roads. Last December a rain covered hole in the A355 main road in Farnham Common wrecked my tyre. After six months, I finally get a conclusion from the council saying that they inspect the roads every month and won't be paying the claim. To me this is a get-out clause for poor standard road inspections and a lack of action investing tax payers money on road safety. Virtually every A and B road around Bucks is now infested with potholes and having driven in several other counties recently Bucks is by far the worst standard of roads. The claimed investment in road repairs after the last cold spell is a long time coming. Am I a lone voice in this frustration with a lack of action?

The planning inspector’s decision to accept Wycombe District Council’s changes to the emerging town plan Delivery and Site Allocations Plan document, and particularly the deletion of the link road has been the subject of recent articles in the Marlow Free Press. In those articles concerns have been raised at the way in which the matters have been handled, which in turn suggests that it may be helpful to place on record a number of facts.

Even if the other parties have themselves to blame, it is a sad day for British politics when so many votes are cast for such a shallow and superficial party as UKIP. Of course I read about the appearance of Nigel Farage parading his opposition to HS2 in your columns, but this does rather smack of a politician jumping onto any convenient bandwagon that comes along.

When was the last time you were educated about driving? For me it was 26 years ago and apart from helping my daughter to learn the Highway Code so she could pass her theory test, my knowledge hadn’t been properly updated. Then I went along to the AA-run DriveTech Speed Awareness Course feeling that with all this experience I knew quite a lot. I also went knowing that if I attended I wouldn’t have to take three points on my driving licence for speeding 35mph in a 30mph zone. I thought that it would be a waste of money at £95 and resented giving up a Sunday afternoon on the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Sorry to have to come back to John Laker’s letter (BFP letters, May 3) again, but he did strike a chord with me and his suggestion of having a waste incinerator. For years now I have been in favour of such a method of waste disposal and here’s why: In Europe they have many of these and they’re well proven technology. The waste is first of all sorted by humans for even the slightest items that can be recycled before the remainder of the waste is incinerated. The method used is more commonly the fluidised bed or grate so that every single item of combustible material is burned completely with air scrubbers cleaning off the exhausts before evacuating them into the open air. It is a highly efficient form of energy production generating lots of power as John says and the cherry on the cake is, less waste for our landfills.

Had he done so he would have been able to catch up with no less than three local Conservative councillors who were in an audience he describes as ‘UKIP supporters.’ Mr Hayes clearly has some work to do to prevent any further defections from his pro HS2 party.

The screws are projected to generate a small amount of very expensive electricity. David DeChambeau is the managing director of Southeast Power Engineering (SEPEL).
