Marlow Museum is set to celebrate its 15th birthday in a newly refurbished state this month.

The museum, which celebrates its 15th birthday this year, is currently based at the Peacock Room at Court Garden.

Although chairman Michael Hyde told the Free Press in February that a larger multi-room premises might be on the cards in the future, the collection of important local artefacts will unveil the fruits of a comparably modest but still significant makeover later this month.

Following a “top to bottom” refurbishment, the museum will reopen on Wednesday, May 22, with a dual celebration of its new look and 15 years at the Court Garden site.

Speaking at the beginning of the year, Mr Hyde said significant interior work had been needed to “enhance the visitor experience” and “better highlight” objects of local historical importance.

In a survey conducted last April, 88 per cent of museum visitors said they thought the Marlow Museum deserved to be in a bigger building.

One surveyed visitor said: “It needs to be a ‘destination’ when you visit Marlow. When I go to other towns, I always seek out the museum to get some history.”

The Peacock Room venue is rented by trustees from Buckinghamshire Council. The museum’s board has said in the past that it has been unable to find a larger home for the town’s historical artefacts within financial constraints.
