TESTS are being carried out on 'illegally dumped waste' which continues to smoulder and produce toxic-smelling smoke in Hazlemere.

Bellway Homes has confirmed samples have been sent off for testing after a large pile of rubbish went up in flames on Thursday, April 25. The site owners claim it was caused by "fly-tippers".

Despite the best efforts of the fire service, the mound has continued to smoulder and smoke for more than a fortnight, leading local residents to complain of nausea and headaches from the fumes.

Unearthed documents reveal "elevated levels of contamination" were identified in some areas of the site at the time plans were submitted for the Pennwood Grange  development in Amersham Road.

A Bucks Council Environmental Protection Officers report dated August 2023 said: "As part of the site investigation soil samples were taken and sent for chemical analysis for a range of potential contaminants.

"It is noted that olfactory signs of contamination in addition to visible potential asbestos containing material (ACM) were identified in the former scrapyard area."

At the same site, rubbish continues to produce smoke which smells of 'rubber' making it hard for residents to breath.

Buckinghamshire Fire Service has told residents to keep their doors and windows shut.

Bellway has confirmed a waste transfer contractor has taken samples of the waste for testing.

Results are expected by Tuesday, May 14, so until then the waste cannot be moved.

A spokesperson from Bellway said: “Bellway has been advised by the local fire service that whilst the waste may continue to smoulder, the fire is unlikely to spread and therefore no further action is required of the fire service at the stage. Bellway will continue to liaise with the fire service to monitor the situation.

“With regards to the removal of the illegally deposited waste, Bellway has employed a waste transfer contractor.

"This contractor is required to take the samples of the waste so that it was be disposed of using the correct methodology and to the correct destination.

"The contractor has collected the samples required, and these are currently being tested.

"The results are expected by 14 May, the waste can then be removed."

The Environment Agency said they have written to Bellway Homes asking them to clear the waste.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “We are investigating the circumstances of the alleged illegal deposit of waste at land near Amersham Road in Hazelmere.

“We are supporting Bucks County Council, who are leading on the incident, and Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service. We have also written to the landowner to formalise the need for them to clear the waste.

“If you are suspicious of any waste crime, you can report it to us on our 24/7 incident number on 0800 807060 or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111”.
