For independent explorers, our readers favourite picks were Burnham Beeches, the Common Wood in Penn and Ashridge.

Burnham Beeches in Slough offers 482 acres of woodland, and the area shows signs of human habitation from as early as the Iron Age, the Woodland Trust said.

One visitor said: “Nice atmosphere being surrounded by the trees and benches scattered around the area when you want to have a rest after walking.”

Penn’s Common Wood comprises of 260 acres of woodland managed by volunteers, including precious habitats and uncommon species typical for ancient woods. The ancient and semi-natural woodland is open for walking, running, cycling and horse-riding.

Ashridge Estate and Ashridge Park sprawls across 5,000 acres of Chilterns Hills, offering miles of footpaths and bridleways.

Walkers can observe the seasonal changes in the beech and oak woodlands and adventure across the commons and chalk downlands.

The woods are a home to picturesque sea of bluebells in the spring time and butterflies in the summer.

In the autumn, you can spot a fallow deer rut.
