Heavy snow has hit south Bucks today causing widespread disruption to transport across the county, with police now warning people to avoid driving and not 'risk lives'.

Many residents woke up today to find gardens and roads completely covered – and the wintery showers aren’t showing any signs of stopping yet.

A Met Office weather warning remains in place across the day with some forecasters predicting it won’t stop until past midnight.

And now a new for ice has been issued between 4am and 11am tomorrow.

Following heavy snowfall across the Thames Valley overnight, members of the public are being advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

A number of motorists are currently stranded in their vehicles on the M40 motorway, while trains have been cancelled and some drivers have been forced to leave their cars on main roads.

Police officers are working closely with partner agencies to arrange for roads to be ploughed to allow those stranded to be reached by emergency services, it has just been confirmed.

Many more roads are blocked and have been affected by snow.

Chief inspector Henry Parsons, of the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: "The message to motorists is do not travel today unless it is absolutely unavoidable. Do not put your life and the lives of others at risk.

"Many of the roads in the Thames Valley have been blocked and, as temperatures plummet, will become extremely icy and dangerous.

“Keep up to date with the weather forecasts and advice over the next few days and ensure you can safely complete journeys and, when it is safe to drive, ensure you drive in accordance with the road conditions."

Earlier today the Met Office issued a new amber warning for snow in the area until 6pm this evening.

Forecasters said: “A spell of heavy snow is likely over parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of Northern and Eastern England on Sunday.

“Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations.

“There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

“This is an update to extend the warning area as far south as Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.

“The northern extent has also been reduced somewhat, pulling this out of Liverpool and South Yorkshire however a yellow warning remains in force here.”
