Emergency services have closed a busy High Wycombe road tonight after a major leak caused a sinkhole to open up in the street – with water from a burst pipe shooting metres into the air.

Part of West Wycombe Road was closed near Sands at around 6.30pm, causing long delays across the town.

Crews have been dealing with a leak in West Wycombe Road since this morning, but a huge leak has now forced officers to close the road.

“Subsidence” in the carriageway between Desborough Park Road and Mill End Road has seen a sinkhole appear, according to traffic links.

Chief Reporter Stephanie Wareham at the scene.

According to Bucks Fire and Rescue, the road was closed, a safety cordon was set up and residents were given advice.

The incident has now been left with Thames Water and Thames Valley Police.

Eye-witnesses reported seeing water “flying high into the air” with crowds of people gathering to watch.

Earlier, Thames Water has tweeted to say teams are on their way to the scene to investigate, with police and fire crews also in attendance.
