A sea of more than 2,000 Santas descended on Marlow once again for the annual festive fun run tradition on Sunday.

Organisers of the Rotary Clubs of Marlow's Santa Fun Run say this year's 5k race - which started from the High Street for the first time - was a resounding success.

Marlow's own Olympians also joined the race, with Sir Steve Redgrave starting the race and taking part along with Alex Danson and Naomi Riches lead the pre-race warm up.

Rain did not dampen the spirits of the 2,500 Santas who ran, walked or jogged the charity race, and the male winner was by Dave Lawley, with Stephen Francis second and Sam Haynes third.

The first female across the finish line was Hannah Hurst, followed by Kate Sophoclides in second and Sophie Whitworth in third.

A record number of spectators also lined the streets to provide moral support, while the Jam Theatre group entertained passers-by with some dance routines.

David Sutherland, chair of the fun run organising committee, said: “The run this year was a great success, and despite a few weather worries most of the event took place in fairly dry conditions.

"We were delighted to see the start take place at the bottom of the High Street for the very first time.

"Whilst this allowed an even better visual spectacle it also reduced congestion in the park, and we hope it was seen positively by the participants. Even so it took around 10 minutes for all the runners to clear the start line.

"Yet again we saw a huge effort from the local community to enable this event. Over 200 people helped control traffic and the runners, and generally prepare and then clear the area.

"As always we also get great support from local businesses – with special mention to Sytner BMW (High Wycombe), Marlow Waitrose, and Green’s Printers. A further 15 local companies provide support of some sort."

Planning for the 14th annual race next year is due to start from next week, with organisers preparing to hold the Santa Fun Run 2018 on December 2.
