Wycombe Wanderers are hoping to achieve something this weekend that they have never done before – beat Charlton Athletic in a league game.

The Addicks, who are the next team to visit Adams Park this season, boast one of the best head-to-head records against the Chairboys, as in the six matches they have faced each other in league competition, the South Londoners have come out on top every single time.

In those six matches, Wanderers have scored seven goals and have only taken the lead once, but, with Nigel Adkins’ men out of sorts at the moment, and with Wycombe in need of a win, maybe this Saturday could be the day that the curse against Charlton is broken?

The last time these two sides played was back in 2019

The first league meeting between the two sides was back in August 2009 – it was the opening day of the 2009/10 season and Charlton were playing their first game in the third tier of English football since 1981 following their relegation from the Championship that spring, whilst the Chairboys were beginning life in League One for the first time.

A 3-2 victory for the Addicks at the Valley would start a brilliant run that is one of the best in the EFL, but, in recent weeks, the form table has suggested that this invincible streak could come to an end this Saturday.

The former Premier League side are enduring a torrid time, as they have won just once from their six games so far this league season.

After spending most of last season fighting for promotion back to the Championship, Adkins’ men have had a terrible start to the campaign, despite being one of the favourites to go up.

The Reds have scored just five goals in the league this season and sit in 20th in the table, and are only outside the relegation places on goal difference.

Wycombe, who are winless in two league games and are winless in three in all competitions, go into the game following a 0–0 draw against promotion-pushing Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

And despite not offering a lot in attack last weekend, the defensive display of Anthony Stewart and Ryan Tafazolli caused problems for the Oxford forwards, and if the duo is on their A-game this weekend, it could be a difficult afternoon for Charlton.

Hanlan was at Charlton a few seasons ago

Brandan Hanlan is also up against his former club, and with Garath McCleary showing some of his best form since his days at Reading, Wycombe should try and exploit a struggling Athletic defence.

Charlton are not going to be a pushover, but I would like to think Wanderers will get the win.

My prediction: Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 Charlton Athletic
