Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has reflected on his side’s ‘positive’ performance against Tottenham Hotspur’s Under 21s in the Football League Trophy.

In what was the inaugural game of the competition this season, the Chairboys’ match against the North London club finished goalless after 90 minutes.

It then went to a penalty shootout which Wycombe won 4-3, with Jack Young scoring the decisive spot-kick.

The result has given Wanderers an extra point in their group, which is also shared with League One rivals Peterborough United, and Hertfordshire outfit, Stevenage.

Speaking on the match, Ainsworth said: “We wanted to put our style onto Tottenham to see how they dealt with the high press and in the first half, I thought we did really well.

“We created a lot of chances, but it was just the final bit of putting in the goal, which has been a bit of an issue.

“In the second half, we tired a bit and I think there are a few boys in that team that need regular 90 minutes, and that’s hard because we have one first team game a week.

“This year, we are trying to give the boys regular minutes so that they can get fitter and fitter as match fitness is so important.

“You need to be sharp and last, and I thought some of the boys tired a bit towards the end, which is when the game became a bit more open.

“I don’t think we were ever in trouble, but there were a couple of shots and a couple of breakaways you don’t want to end in a goal.

“On the flipside, Ali went through with a couple of minutes to go and he blazed it over.

“He was a thorn in Spurs’ side and there were many good performances.

“A few of the older boys got minutes too in Joe Jacobson, Daryl Horgan, Nick Freeman and Jason McCarthy, so there were many positives from tonight.”

It will begin at 7pm.
