Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman has praised Wycombe Wanderers going into Tuesday night's fixture.

The North West club take on the Chairboys under the Adams Park lights on September 13, with the 62-year-old empathising the club’s recent play-off final defeat in May, the quality of the players, and the job Gareth Ainsworth has so far done.

The midweek match will be the 26th time the two clubs would have met since their inaugural fixture in September 2006.

Since then, Wanderers have won just six of those matches, Stanley nine, with there being 10 draws.

In fact, their 2-1 home victory over Stanley on the opening day of last season was only the second time they had defeated Accrington at Adams Park – their first was in 2009.

Speaking to the club’s media team, Coleman said: “I know how it feels to lose in the play-offs… it's not a good feeling.

“They've got a good set of lads there, great management in Gareth, longevity personified, and they know that they'll come through that.

“They've got good players and it's always been a tough place to go, we've generally done okay there though.

"I don't think they'll be getting the credit they deserve, just like I keep banging this drum that our coaches don't get the credit they deserve.

“People think it's all about gung-ho spirit at Accrington and camaraderie and it's not.”

Going into the match, Accrington have only won just one league match so far this season which was a 1-0 triumph away at Shrewsbury Town on August 6.

A 4-4 home draw against Burton Albion where they rescued a point thanks to two injury-time goals soon followed, but seven points from their first seven games has seen the club sit just two places and two points above the relegation zone.

Wanderers on the other hand have picked up five points from the last nine, after losing three consecutive matches for the first time since March 2021.

Coleman continued: “We can't alter people's perception of us, we've just got to keep doing our job and we don't have to live up to the stereotypes that get labelled to us and Wycombe will be the same."
