Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth believes club legend and former captain Matt Bloomfield ‘will be a success’ at Colchester United, following the latter’s recent appointment as manager.

The 38-year-old left the Chairboys ending a 19-year association with the club to take up the reins at the Colchester Community Stadium on September 30.

He took charge of his first game in management a day later at AFC Wimbledon, and despite the Us taking the lead through Kwesi Appiah’s first goal for the club, a double from Josh Davison succumbed United to their seventh league loss in 11 games.

However, regardless of the loss on his managerial debut, Ainsworth is full of confidence that Bloomfield will steer his new side away from the League Two relegation places.

The Essex club currently sit in 21st position.

He said: “It’s very weird without him here.

“I know he started off with a defeat at Wimbledon, and it’ll be harsh to judge him after 24 hours of being a manager.

“But I think he will be a success there.

“He will turn them around and he’ll get some of the Wycombe culture there, but he’ll have his own ideas with what he wants to do.

“That’s a success story and I just want to thank him for all of his hard work as a player, captain, coach, roommate, and friend.

“He’s been everything for me and I wish him all the best.”

Speaking on his first game as a boss, Bloomfield told the local press: “We'll learn from it, that's for sure.

"I've barely even been in the building 24 hours and there's plenty to learn about this group.

"But one thing I'm really positive about today [October 1] is that I've seen enough to know that we can get results."
