Conceding at corner kicks was once again the bane of Wycombe Wanderers, as they threw away two one-goal leads in their 2-2 home draw against Port Vale on November 1.

Anis Mehmeti had given the Chairboys the advantage with a stunning strike before James Wilson levelled via a set piece on the stroke of half-time.

Lewis Wing then made it 2-1 just after the break with a brilliant long-range volley, however, Tom Conlon’s first goal in just over a year made sure that both sides left Adams Park with a point.

Both of the goals Wanderers conceded came from corner kicks, which means they have now let in four strikes from corners in the last three games as they remain in midtable.

Speaking on the defending, manager Gareth Ainsworth said: “We have got to defend set pieces better and if you keep conceding at set pieces, you give yourself mountains to climb.

“We had scored two really good goals and we did more than enough to win the game, but, unfortunately, you just can’t defend like that in the six-yard box.

“You’re asking for trouble if you defend like that.

“They had a free header and we never get that when we go up for corners.

“We will no doubt work on that in what was a scrappy game.”

When asked if the repetitive nature of the goals being conceded from corners was a ‘concern’, Ainsworth added: “It’s a big concern and it’s something that we need to work on.

“We will have to work on things and change it slightly.

"I don’t want to make any excuses, but we just need to make sure that we’re on top of defending set plays.

“It is something that we pride ourselves on and we have got to make sure that secure.”

Finally, on his former club Port Vale, the manager concluded: “Port Vale are fighting to stay in this league after getting promoted last season.

“They have come here and they were big and strong."

Up next is Walsall at home in the FA Cup on November 5.
