Wycombe Wanderers right-back is looking forward to facing his old club Walsall in the FA Cup this weekend.

The ex-Southampton man spent the 2016/17 season on loan at the club from the Premier League outfit, where he played every second of the Saddler’s 52 league and cup games that year.

His brilliant performances and his five goals for the Midlands outfit earned him the club’s Player of the Year award as they finished in 14th place in League One.

McCarthy said: “I had a great time at Walsall.

“I had a great relationship with the club and the fans and I really enjoyed my time there.

“For me, it was a really important season for my development as it helped me stamp down the wing-back role.

“I’m really looking forward to it so when I saw the draw I was delighted and hopefully we can have a good run.”

He also spoke about his experiences playing in the FA Cup for the Chairboys, as the club have faced Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa twice.

The 26-year-old added: “The FA Cup is huge as it gives us an opportunity to go on a run.

“In the past, I’ve played against Tottenham twice, Aston Villa a couple of times and it’s really important to us.

“We’ve had good memories in the FA Cup and I remember we took about 4/5,000 fans to Villa Park which was quality.

“Financially, it’s important for the club as well and the fans love it.

“There is always a great feeling when it comes around and it’s always welcome hopefully we can get to the third round as that’s when it gets exciting.”

Finally, on last year’s disappointment against Hartlepool, he concluded: “Hartlepool provided us with a really good test as they played really well in both games.

“The first game was great for Chris Forino as that was the start for him as he then burst onto the scene, but the loss from last year isn’t in our minds as we’re looking forward to the match.”
