Walsall manager Michael Flynn has explained how his team’s tactics ‘limited’ Wycombe Wanderers following their 2-0 victory over the Chairboys in the FA Cup.

Goals from Jacob Maddox and Isaac Hutchinson gave the Saddlers their first away win since August and helped the Midlands club progress into the second round of the competition.

The loss means it’s the fourth time in five years that Wanderers have failed to progress beyond the first hurdle of the cup, as they suffered their fifth consecutive home match without a win (three draws and two defeats).

Flynn told the Express and Star: “They [Walsall] were outstanding.

“I think the tactics worked in that we limited them on chances and pressed well in midfield, but it was all down to the players because they were outstanding.

“I am just glad they could do it for the fans as well, who travelled in numbers and didn’t shut up from start to finish.

“It was a pleasure to play in front of them.”

The result means Walsall have now beaten Wycombe 11 times in their 22 meetings, with four of those wins coming at Adams Park.

Flynn continued: “That was as good an away performance from a League Two side that you will see and it could have been more.

"We played a box formation in midfield which worked well and gave them problems.

"I don't think they expected that but it meant we were never short of someone to cover or assist with or without the ball.

"That was a big part of us winning the game today along with the good defending, sticking with our men and the general hard work because that was needed coming to a higher-level team.”
