Former Wycombe Wanderers forward Scott Kashket played an integral role in his new club’s shock victory in the League Cup.

The 26-year-old, who now plays for Gillingham in League Two, scored the Gills’ fifth penalty in their brilliant 6-5 shootout win over Premier League Brentford on November 8.

The Kent-based team had gone a goal behind thanks to an Ivan Toney strike after just three minutes, but Mikael Mandron’s equaliser with 15 minutes remaining took the tie straight to spot-kicks.

Kashket, who left the Chairboys in the summer of 2021, came on as a 93rd minute substitute for Dom Jefferies, with his only task being to score in the shootout.

Taking Gillingham’s fifth penalty, he smashed his shot beyond David Raya to make it 5-4.

However, Mathias Jensen slotted home his kick and after Alex MacDonald converted his shot, Mikkel Damsgaard, who scored for Denmark against England in the Euro 2020 semi-finals, smacked the crossbar, and Brentford were eliminated.

During his six years at Adams Park, Kashket scored 31 goals in 129 matches.

He also has the honour of being Wycombe’s first Championship goalscorer during their only season in the second tier during the 2020/21 campaign.

This was in a 2-1 home loss against Millwall in October 2020.
