Peterborough United have parted ways with manager Grant McCann and assistant Cliff Byrne following the club’s 3-0 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers.

The loss on Year’s Day for the Posh was their 11th of the league season, with the club also suffering four consecutive defeats in League One on two separate occasions since July.

A tally of four points from the last 21 available has seen Peterborough go from fourth to outside the play-off places, with the defeat against Gareth Ainsworth’s men being the final straw for Posh’s owners.

In a lengthy statement that was published on January 4, chairman, Darragh MacAnthony said: “Grant and Cliff have been very professional throughout their time with the football club.

“Sometimes in football, it just hasn’t worked out.

“After watching us lose 3-0 at home on New Year’s Day [against Wycombe], that hammered home what kind of run we have been on, one win in 10 weeks and that is just not going to cut it.

“We have high expectations, and those high expectations will continue.”

McCann, during his playing days, appeared in 186 games for the club and scored 35 goals.

His stint in charge of Peterborough was his second following his first spell between 2016 and 2018.

The Northern Irishmen’s replacement has also been confirmed, as Darren Ferguson will be in the managerial hot seat for an unprecedented fourth spell at London Road.

MacAnthony continued: “We are delighted that Darren has agreed to take over until the end of the season.

“When you look for a manager in January, it is a very difficult time, an impossible time to get someone in.

"So if you were to write down what you would want in a manager, someone who identifies with how you work was a football club, someone who has had multiple promotions on their CV, someone with a style of football that gets people off their seats, where would you find a manager like that?

“It just so happens we have one that lives nearby and has agreed to come and help us until the end of the season.

Speaking after the match on January 1, Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth stated that McCann is a ‘brilliant manager.’
