Wycombe Wanderers attacking midfielder Anis Mehmeti is expected to join Championship outfit Bristol City today [January 31].

It has been reported by the Telegraph that the 22-year-old, who has scored 19 goals in 97 games for the Chairboys, is set to undergo a medical at the West Country side ahead of Tuesday night’s transfer deadline, with a fee believed to have been agreed a few days prior.

Speaking in December after Wanderers’ 2-0 home victory over Portsmouth, where the Albanian registered a goal and an assist, manager Gareth Ainsworth revealed that if ‘any club wants to put £5m, £6m, or £7m in, then we might consider letting him go.’

Mehmeti signed a new-and-improved three-year contract extension with the club in the back of 2021, and his potential departure from Adams Park is set to be the highest fee ever received for Wycombe Wanderers in their history, although this is yet to be confirmed.

His alleged imminent exit has led the club to secure the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Chem Campbell, who has joined on loan until the end of the season.

Magic Mehmeti’s impact

Dubbed by Wanderers fans as ‘the most exciting young Wycombe player since Eberechi Eze’, Mehmeti, who joined in 2020, has made himself one of the most talked-about names in the Football League this season.

After being picked up from Non League Woodford Town in the autumn of 2020, and going straight into a Championship team just weeks after arriving at Adams Park, the former Tottenham, Fulham, and Norwich youth player has certainly made his mark in a Wanderers shirt this term.

From his stunning strike against Burton Albion on the opening day of the campaign, to netting wonderful solo goals versus Barnsley, Fleetwood Town, Port Vale, and Oxford United to name a few, it wasn’t long until several clubs across the pyramid started to take note of his displays.

Along with Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest were also reportedly interested in the youngster.

However, it seems that Nigel Pearson’s team have won the race in capturing Mehmeti’s signature, with the club’s new incoming CEO, Phil Alexander, who was a senior advisor at Wycombe until just a few weeks ago, allegedly playing a huge role in the move.

Speaking on the rumoured deal, Wycombe said that ‘the club doesn’t comment on speculation.’

Today’s transfer deadline is at 11pm.
