Lewis Wing scored his sixth goal in eight games as Wycombe Wanderers defeated play-off rivals Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Adams Park.

The fixture started at a blistering pace as chances were created in the opening exchanges.

The visitors had the match’s first attempt after three minutes when captain Ricardo Santos fired over from inside the six-yard box.

Moments later, Sam Vokes saw his long-range shot fly over James Trafford’s goal.

The efforts started to build for the Chairboys as Vokes once again went close, but the Bolton shot-stopper did brilliantly to deny the Welshman his sixth of the season with a low block from a header.

The Trotters did not hold back as they started to get into the contest, and on 17 minutes, Gethin Jones thought he had given Bolton the lead.

His strike from inside the box crashed the underside of the crossbar and bounced on the wrong side of the goal line, as Wycombe found themselves fortunate to not fall behind.

The remainder of the opening period saw both sides try their luck from range, before a moment of brilliance on the stroke of half-time put Wycombe a goal up.

Nine minutes of additional time was added due to a serious injury sustained by Jack Grimmer earlier on in the fixture, and in the final few seconds of the first-half, Wing scored his eighth of the campaign in spectacular fashion.

A well-worked short corner routine with Garath McCleary saw the 25-year-old curl home his sixth strike in eight games on the edge of the Bolton box.

It’s now the best scoring season of his professional career.

The second period was a cagier affair as Bolton searched for an equaliser.

Declan John, Josh Sheehan, Dion Charles and Kyle Dempsey all tried their luck, but heroic defending from the backline thwarted any attempts.

Wycombe’s best efforts after half-time fell to David Wheeler, who was denied by Trafford, before Vokes had another chance fly over the top.

Ian Evatt’s threw the kitchen sink for the latter stages of the contest, but the day belonged to the hosts.

The result means the Chairboys have won their last five matches, and have kept nine clean sheets from their last 15 games.

Up next is an away trip to Shrewsbury Town on February 25.
