Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield believes ‘effort’ and ‘character’ helped his side gain a point against Charlton Athletic.

The Chairboys fell a goal behind after Miles Leaburn’s 15th-minute strike, before Chris Forino equalised with a powerful header with nine minutes to go.

The 1-1 draw was the second between the two clubs this season, and the match on March 25 was the first time this league campaign that Wanderers had gained a point after falling a goal down away from home.

Bloomfield said: “We’ve got to respect the point because we got it from a very good team.

“The Valley is a tough place to come but we're pleased with the effort and character that we showed.

“We didn’t give up and that’s what pleases me.

“We can never question the teamwork, the effort, the togetherness, and these were some of the reasons why I took this job.

"It was to be part of that once more.”

During the match, the 39-year-old opted to replace Tjay De Barr for Nick Freeman just after the hour mark, with the latter playing a huge role in Wycombe’s leveller.

It was his shot that was tipped away by Ashley Maynard-Brewer, and from the resulting corner, Joe Jacobson’s delivery was nodded home by the centre back.

He continued: “Nick did very well when we came on.

“He played really well against Burton and Bristol Rovers in recent weeks, but Tjay has also been very good in that time too.

“So we put Nick on to give us some fresh legs as we know he can beat a man, and when he took that shot that led to our goal, I was waiting for the net to nestle.

“It’s also tough at the same time because we’re missing Garath McCleary and Sam Vokes.

“They are two big players for us, especially in those attacking areas.

“But we have to be pleased with the squad we’ve got as everyone knows the part they play."

Up next for Wycombe is MK at home on April 1.
