Despite Morecambe’s current position of 23rd in the League One table, Wycombe Wanderers right-back Jason McCarthy believes playing teams near the bottom of the league ‘are tricky’.

The Chairboys take on Derek Adams’ men on April 15 at the Mazuma Stadium, with the two clubs being separated by 15 places and 30 points respectively.

A defeat for the Shrimps, coupled with other results, could see them all-but relegated back to League Two with three games remaining, whilst a victory for Wanderers will edge them closer to the top six.

However, McCarthy insists that despite’s Morecambe perilous place in the standings, the fixture in the North West will be anything but easy.

He said: “They [Morecambe] will be scrapping for their lives so we know it will be a tough game, but we’re in a good place after our win on Monday against Forest Green and we want to keep the momentum going.

“We knew that we weren’t where we wanted to be at Ipswich on Friday, but they are a great team and, in my opinion, they are the best team in the league.

“We weren’t at the levels we know we can be at.

“Forest Green might have been a game that we were expected to win, but those games against teams near or the bottom are really tricky.

“I’ve been in those teams and when you play in them, the shackles are off, but it was good to get the win, and we want to back it up in these last five games.

“We’ve got a great opportunity to achieve something this season.”

Morecambe have spent 38 of their 42 game weeks this season in the bottom four, with their highest position of the campaign being 16th.

This was after a 0-0 draw against Shrewsbury Town on the opening weekend back in July.
