A calamitous error by Wycombe's keeper Max Stryjek gifted Barnsley a 1-0 win at Oakwell, as Wanderers’ winless run in the league was extended to seven games.

A much-improved display from Matt Bloomfield’s men would ultimately go unrewarded, with the Adams Park side being forced to accept their third league defeat in a row, following home losses against Stevenage and Reading respectively.

Sam Cosgrove scored the only goal of the game in second-half injury time, though the moment wasn’t lacking controversy.

Max Stryjek invited the Tykes striker to jog towards him before picking up the ball, and with that, a gentle nudge from the forward sent the keeper tumbling to the ground.

Wycombe’s number one then lost control of the ball, giving the striker the easy task of sliding the ball in the empty net for his goal for the club.

Wanderers’ appeals were waved away by referee Darren Drysdale, with Max Stryjek himself receiving a caution, and Sheffield United loanee Harry Boyes earning himself a red card.

The Chairboys started the game well, and had the game’s first chance.

Chris Forino’s excellent ball into the channel found Dale Taylor in the box, who’s cut back eventually fell to ex-Barnsley man Josh Scowen, his low drive was blocked on the line.

In a quiet first half, the early chance would be the best that Wycombe could muster.

It didn’t take long for the second half to burst into life, and it needed to after the first.

A poor challenge from Wycombe’s Killian Phillips saw him cautioned and gave the home crowd a spark to ignite.

It was then chance after chance as Wycombe struggled with the constant siege on their goal.

A desperate attempt to earn a clean sheet away from home for the first time since the beginning of September saw bodies thrown in the firing line.

Wycombe even had a few chances of their own towards the climax.

The introduction of Lyle Taylor gave Wanderers a new lease of life up front, and he very nearly found the opener, if it wasn’t for a great block by a red shirt.

Stryjek’s moment of madness then came out of nowhere in stoppage time, and Cosgrove would thank him graciously by scoring his first Barnsley goal, ensuring Wycombe travelled home empty-handed.

The result leaves Wycombe in 15th in League One, six points above the drop zone, ahead of Emirates FA Cup action this weekend at home to Morecambe.
