Wycombe Wanderers conceded a 120th minute goal as they fell to a cruel 1-0 away defeat against Wigan Athletic.

Charlie Hughes, who has been on the books at Manchester City and Liverpool before his move to the Latics, hooked his acrobatic effort beyond Max Stryjek to succumb the Adams Park side to their 11th league loss of the season.

Wanderers started strong, with Kieran Sadlier fashioning a good chance for Sam Vokes, cutting back into his strong right foot and whipping in a good cross, but the Welshman would miss the header.

The opening 45 minutes largely devolved into a back-and-forth between for most of the contest, but Wigan would slowly grow in the game, largely spurned on by the skill and attacking presence of Stephen Humphrys, who continually caused the Chairboy’s defence problems.

The first major chances came in the 28th minute, as a smart cross by Humphrys missed Charlie Wyke, whilst a follow-up shot went wide.

Quickly, Steven Sessegnon would attack up the right-hand side, delivering a vicious cross that curled over the heads of any attacking Wigan players.

Wycombe responded as Vokes pounced on a poor back pass to go one one-on-one with Sam Tickle, who came out quickly and sent the ball into the stands.

Wigan would enjoy another spell of successive attacks, but would again nearly concede on the counter, with Luke Leahy fizzing in a powerful through ball Gareth McCleary was unable to control.

The second period saw Chem Campbell make his second Wanderers debut after he replaced an injured Garath McCleary, before the match was paused for nearly 20 minutes.

Referee Adam Herczeg took a blow to the head before being replaced by fourth official, Steven Rushton.

Play resumed and the game opened up as Luke Leahy’s effort deflected in off Kieran Sadlier, but was given as offside, whilst Sessegnon had arguably the best chance of the contest, but his one-on-one with Max Stryjek went wide.

Substitutes Richard Kone and Gideon Kodua came in to add that attacking threat, but in 120th minute of the contest, Hughes’ strike would Wigan all three points.

It’s the ninth time that Wycombe have conceded an injury-time strike this league season, and their fourth this calendar year.

The result also ended Wanderers’ unbeaten start to 2024, making it just one league victory in 16 league games.

Up next is a home fixture against bottom-of-the-table Fleetwood Town.
