Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has reflected on his side’s 1-0 home league loss against Stevenage.

The Chairboys, despite playing well, were defeated for the 13th time this season after Carl Piergianni’s first-half strike settled the game for the Hertfordshire-based team.

Things went from bad to worse as Kane Vincent-Young was substituted with a quad injury, and goalkeeper Max Stryjek was sent-off for a late challenge on Jordan Roberts.

The red card was the Pole’s first in English football, and he will miss Wanderers’ next match which will be against Cheltenham Town on February 27.

Here is what Bloomfield had to say at the Lamex.

On Wycombe’s performance

“I thought we were brilliant for the first 20 minutes as we hit the bar and had many final third entries.

“We should have had more and we brought the energy that we wanted to bring as we knew it would be a tough game.

“I also thought for the last 15 minutes we were excellent despite having 10 men.

“We should have two penalties and I believe we should have walked out of here with a point.

“In terms of performance, there was a lot to be pleased about but we came here to try and win, not lose.

“Of course, it was a lot harder with 10 players, but, we gave it a right go near the end.

“We’ll walk out of here with positives.

On the red card and Franco Ravizzoli’s league debut

“It was a ball over the top and we’ve got to defend those situations better, as it comes just from behind us.

“We need to better there, as we know with 11 players, we’re confident we’re going to win the game.

“Franco was very good.

“He had on rocky moment but it’s never easy for them as they have no notice warm up or anything.

“They’re straight on and Franco did well.

“I thought his kicking/distribution was fantastic and since he’s been here, he’s never let me down.”

On having two penalties turned away in the final few moments

“One was a blatant handball, and the second was on Vokesy.

[On the latter], “I’ve been told that it was a penalty but it wasn’t given due to his size.

“I’m not sure why he [Sam Vokes] has different rules against him than other players, but apparently, he’s big enough to look after himself.

“I’m baffled by it.”

On making eight changes

“We had to make changes because of how the lads were feeling on Wednesday, as a few are having injury risks but today, we played well.

“We played well today and lost but didn’t play well on Wednesday and won.

“On the balance of the season, we could have got a lot more but you get the results you deserve at the end of the day.

“It’s been a recurring theme this season that we’ve played well and not got a win or a draw, but we need to get those performances into wins.”

On one year on from his first Wycombe game in charge

“It’s been eventful.

“I’ve spoken to a few experienced managers who have given me their opinions on how hard it was going to be to follow the gaffer’s [Gareth Ainsworth’s] footsteps.

“In terms of the longevity and the success that he had was the way he wanted it, so a change in that was always going to be bumpy.

“There have been highs and lows and we’ve learnt a lot.”
