Wycombe Wanderers’ hopes of a top-two finish took a huge dent as they were thrashed 4-0 at home to fellow promotion chasers Charlton Athletic.

The Chairboys began the day in second, one point and one place clear of third-place Wrexham, but the Addicks were awesome at Adams Park, which has now put the South Buckinghamshire side third with two games of the league season remaining.

For Charlton, their chances of joining Birmingham City in the top two are a lot stronger, as they are now just four points off.

They bossed Wycombe from start to finish and took an early lead through Lloyd Jones.

On 11 minutes, the 29-year-old registered his third strike of the season with a well-taken attempt which went beyond Will Norris.

They then made it 2-0 on 24 minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Luke Berry, as he was on hand to smash home from 15 yards.

It was his eighth of the campaign and his second in as many games.

Wycombe rarely offered anything definitive as Richard Kone was starved of service, and on the hour mark, the game was wrapped up.

Norris slipped when receiving a back pass from Xavier Simons, and there was Matt Godden to tap in Charlton’s third in front of a jubilant away end.

It was then four moments later, when Karoy Anderson scored a header to send the travelling fans into ecstasy.

Chuks Aneke was given a straight red in stoppage time following a heated exchange with Luke Leahy, but this did not have any bearing on the game or the result.

It’s a very damaging defeat for the Chairboys, who next play Leyton Orient, whilst Charlton ake on Wrexham.

In an ironic twist, a win for Wycombe at Orient next weekend will see them go back to second, on the basis that the Addicks defeat the Welsh outfit.
