From the moment the lights come up, you are bombarded with it – a woman in labour. The thoughts run through her head in a desperate stream: panic, worry, pain, love for the nurse, anger at the nurse and so on until the moment is done in a great roar of pain.

And thus Robin, played by Eastenders star Gillian Taylforth, joins the “giant club” of mothers, who give each other high fives as they pass in their buggies, unconsciously hum the wheels on the bus and spray each other with their breast pumps.

The proviso of Mum’s the Word is very simple: five women on five chairs, taking it in turns to speak about being a mum. But before you start muttering about being too young/old/male for this kind of show, consider this: the men in the audience – yes there were men – were laughing along just as hard as the women. If you have ever been a child or have ever seen a child before then you can’t fail to love this show.

Each woman presents a different kind of ‘mum’, and the style of anecdote delivery changes each time, from angry ‘Dear Partner/Husband’ letters, to hilarious monologues about being splashed by the pre-soak bucket - “sewage workers earn £10 an hour and I - the one covered in s**t - am a volunteer!”.

And though you will ache from laughing too hard, the show still manages to remain meaningful, with moments of poignancy and reflection. You feel that this is a little peek at the truth of motherhood; both the highs and the messy lows.

These five actresses swing from high comedy to deep emotion in a trice, and they are all fabulous throughout. Everyone will have their favourite, but for me, Sally Ann Matthews stood out as the mismatched hair-all-over-the-place Alison.

That said, this is truly an ensemble piece, with each woman delighting in different ways, and all pulling together with a genuine sense of companionship and fun.

I struggle to think of anyone who would not enjoy this show. If you are older than 16, then get down to Windsor and get a ticket.
