A PRINCES Risborough man who chairs an orchestra of young professionals was named CBE in the New Year Honours List.

Michael Berman was recognised for his services to Music and Philanthropy.

He is chairman of Southbank Sinfonia, which is based in Waterloo Road in London, and is seen as a leading orchestral academy.

Managing director, James Murphy, said: "Michael is one of the founders of Southbank Sinfonia and, without his ongoing generosity, enthusiasm and commitment, the orchestra would not be here today.

"Anyone who knows Michael will know what a tireless advocate he is for young musicians and, as one of the founders of Southbank Sinfonia, he has spent over a decade helping them fulfil their potential."

Mr Murphy said Dr Berman has not only been chairman but also played a "vital role" in the musical development of the orchestra's players, taking time to know and support them.

He added: "Beyond all this, Michael is always prepared to go the extra mile (or indeed, several thousand extra miles) for the musicians’ benefit, having cycled across India and Tanzania to raise money for the orchestra.

"We are thrilled to see this kind of commitment to young musicians recognised in the New Year's Honours List, and are hugely grateful to Michael for all he has done, and continues to do."
