THE chairman of The Marlow Society has questioned whether council chiefs care about one of the town's key historical landmarks.

Martin Blunkell has criticised the lack of response the charity has received over its plans to restore the obelisk, situated at the roundabout, at the top of The High Street.

It was erected in 1822 and holds a Grade II listing by English Heritage.

In a column for the Free Press Mr Blunkell said County Hall has been silent on the issue since November.

He said: "We now need a proper response from BCC. Not further prevarication please - or is it a total lack of interest in our Grade II historic structure?" Referencing next Thursday's BCC elections, he said: "No doubt those currently seeking election as county councillor for Marlow will have an answer to this when they canvas you for their votes."

Rosemary Bryant, spokesman for Transport for Bucks said: "The obelisk does sit within our responsibility. Our local area technician has asked for a quote for replacing a damaged cornice stone and to repair the face of the stone obelisk due to erosion but I do not have a date that the work will take place yet and the obelisk does not pose a safety hazard."

Mr Blunkell did however praise Marlow Town Council for its efforts in attempting to restore the obelisk.
