Talks

Airbrushed out - the Untold Stories of Oxford University’s Black Scholars
Speaker: Pamela Roberts, award-winning cultural heritage professional and the author of Black Oxford - The Untold Stories of Oxford University’s Black Scholars. Make a visit to University College in Oxford and you cannot fail to see the grandiose white marble statute of Percy Bysshe Shelley set behind high ornate railings, celebrated as one of the college’s most famous alumni, surprisingly, given that he was expelled after only eight months. Contrast this to Christian Frederick Cole also an alumni of University College, and the first African to practice law in an English court - however, there is no grand monument to Cole, no plaque. Mention his name at the College and you will be met by blank stares and inquisitive looks. Pamela Roberts’ lecture illustrates the long and illustrious history of Black scholars at Oxford University, and celebrates their contributions and legacies from the turn of the 20th century. 01494 603 002.
