I am confused by the long faces and comments made criticising the Hazlemere Parish Council concerning their treatment.
From what I understand, Hazlemere Sports Association paid a nominal ‘peppercorn rent’ when utilising the Memorial Hall. They were making money by sub-contracting the facilities and by charging different sports clubs for its use.
When HSA were asked to pay a more reasonable rent, the parish council were forced to incur large legal costs, which will be borne by the parishioners to regain control of the hall (its market value probably well in excess of a £1million).
When considering who the villains are consider this: Would Manchester United rent Old Trafford to me for a small fee and let me keep all the revenue generated by its use? Need I say more? – Colin Helps, Eastern Dene, Hazlemere
