Dozens of elderly people were treated to a special slap-up Christmas party thanks to the generosity and hard work of students and staff at The Highcrest Academy.

More than 80 guests from the surrounding community attended the annual event for senior citizens earlier this month in the hall of the school in High Wycombe.

They enjoyed bingo, a quiz, sing-songs, a raffle, presents and tea with salmon sandwiches, as well as a Santa Claus courtesy of David Styles, Head of Technology.

Teachers and support staff provided transport for the guests and donated the food and raffle prizes. Sixth formers helped them organise the event, while other students donated gifts for the party-goers.

Gaynor Weldon, assistant principal, said: "It was a real military operation arranging the transport, food and wrapping the presents. We used the school mini-bus and staff cars to take guests to and from the party. It was a real VIP service."

The event, which has been running for more than a decade, is self-funded by the staff and students. Guests were aged in their late 60s to their 90s and were drawn from all over the local community.

"The aim of the event is to engage with the community and recognise the importance of giving something back," added Mrs Weldon.

Party guests were accompanied on each table by representatives from Year 7 and 8. About 20 staff were present during the evening.

Learning Resource Manager, Sandra Cariven, one of the organisers, said: "It’s fun to do. It’s a brilliant event. I had one Year 7 student tell me at the end that it was the best night ever."
