Coronation Street newcomer Lucy Fallon has admitted she felt bad at first about having to be so horrible to her on-screen gran Gail McIntyre.
Lucy is due to make her entrance into Weatherfield as Gail’s (Helen Worth) granddaughter Bethany Platt, who has been living in Milan with her mum Sarah-Louise (Tina O’Brien) but runs away to return to her roots after getting expelled from school.
The first-time actress said of her character being rude to Gail: “I felt so bad. She’s just so nice. The things that Bethany says to Gail are like the things a typical teenager says to her mum, but I wouldn’t be horrible to my nana.
“At first I was like, ‘I’m sorry I’m being really horrible to you!’ But Helen just laughed.”
Lucy, 19, added to the Radio Times: “There’s one scene where I have to chuck this cherub ornament at her. I had to throw it at the window but pretend to aim at Tina’s head.
“It was very funny and we did it in one take. She ended up having to duck as it just skimmed past her head, but luckily it was only made of wax.”
She went on to explain why Bethany had become such a wild child and how Sarah-Louise would struggle when she came back to the street after a seven-year break.
Lucy said: “What you’ll see is that while Sarah and Bethany are close, they’re more like sisters than mother and daughter. When Sarah comes over, Bethany tries to tell her that she wants her mum to be a mum.
“The problem has been that there are only 13 years between them – Bethany hasn’t many boundaries and she’s been left to her own devices a lot. So Sarah is definitely going to struggle with how Bethany is.”
