Marlow's MP has waded into a row over plans to build an eco-friendly modern house on a medieval street alongside some of the town's oldest buildings.

Dominic Grieve said the building proposal on St Peter Street, which as drawn over 25 complaints from neighbours so far, is "difficult to reconcile" with the historic surroundings.

The Conservative has written to Wycombe District Council after residents contacted him for support when Marlow Town Council refused to comment over political ties with the applicant.

Mr Grieve said: "While I have not been able to see all the plans for this proposed property, I have to say that what I have seen suggests to me that it will be in a style that is difficult ro reconcile with the historic landscape of St Peter Street.

"I can, therefore, understand the concerns raised with me that it constitutes inappropriate development."

Applicants Tom and Kate Wrigley say they want to build the modern, square house in the grounds of their property The Old Malt House as an energy-efficient, sustainable retirement home.

But neighbours are concerned the ultra-modern design will be out of character on the historic stretch, which used to be the main river crossing and thoroughfare for Marlow.

However, despite worries the street’s iconic views will be lost, some residents have supported the idea as a "breath of fresh air".

Jonathan Smith, who lives opposite the site, said he appreciates people like the street’s "quaint" character, but that a modern building would bring some life back to the area.

He said: "I have absolutely no objection to the proposed development - quite the opposite, I think the style and build of the house will be a breath of fresh air in a street which looks and feels like a museum.

"I have lived in various countries across Europe, and seen many fabulous examples of modern housing living side by side with much older property even though the designs are radically different."

The plans will be decided by WDC’s Planning Committee, but a hearing date has not yet been set.
