A political figure who played a key role in the growth of two charities has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Ted Collins will take a trip to Buckingham Palace later this year to collect his award for his service to the community of High Wycombe.

The Marlow resident - who celebrates his 86th birthday on Friday - dedicated the MBE to his family and friends for their support.

He said: "I was slightly surprised but I accept it with great pleasure.

"My wife, Jean, was very pleased and I could have never done anything without her and my family’s support - as doing all these things takes you away from them."

The father of three was Leader and Chairman of Wycombe District Council, on which he served as a councillor between 1987 and 2003.

The retired engineer, who has five grandchildren, was also made an Honorary Alderman in 2004.

It was during his time as leader that WDC secured funding towards the launch of the Skidz motoring charity - of which he remains a trustee.

He said: "We had 30 referrals when it started and it has changed dramatically over the years to become a major player with 600 students, it’s fantastic."

Mr Collins is a fundraiser for the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home charity, which he supported during his tenure as High Wycombe Mayor.

He helped to set up the Wycombe and Amersham fundraising group.

WDC chairman Cllr Ian McEnnis said: "Honorary Alderman Ted Collins carried out his duties with great diligence and sincerity.

"On behalf of the council, I would like to thank him for all his hard-work in the community and praise him on being awarded an MBE.

"He is very deserving of this honorific title, which highlights his dedication and achievements."
