Horrified shoppers say they are refusing to use a High Wycombe car park because of the "dirty conditions" and "appalling, overpowering smell" inside.

In recent weeks, town centre visitors have reported that the Wycombe Swan car park is being used by rough sleepers, drug users and others have been seen urinating in the stairwells.

Wycombe District Council, who have been criticised by residents over the state of the St Mary Street multi-storey, say cleaning work is underway on a daily basis.

Earlier this week, Lane End resident, Caroline Watson, sparked an animated discussion on social media after writing about the “obscene” conditions, with many others agreeing that the car park is “not good enough for the people of High Wycombe”.

Mrs Watson said: “The car park is obscene. I was quite horrified when I went down there recently. I was there about a week ago and I was just overpowered by it.

“There was an awful smell and homeless people sleeping in the stairwell.

“Another time there were lots of people in the car park and they all had coats and scarves over their faces to shield from the smell.

“It was just stomach-wrenching, one lady got in the lift and was heaving. It was so bad she got out on the next floor and walked down the ramps inside the car park.

“I mentioned it Facebook and I had the most phenomenal response of other people talking about how bad it is.”

She added: “It could have the most catastrophic effect on our town. This is the entrance to our High Street and the entrance to our theatre. It is where visitors of the town go to.

“I’m just mortified and embarrassed by it. This should be the jewel in our crown.

“To smell this bad, it has been allowed to be the home of the homeless and worse and left to decay.”

Cleaning work is currently ongoing throughout the town centre car park as WDC say staff work hard to maintain a good level of cleanliness in both the Swan and Easton Street car parks.

WDC spokesman, Sue Robinson, said: “We are cleaning stairwells and other public areas on a daily basis to try to keep them as pleasant as we can for our car park customers and in addition we're looking at doing some deep clean work.

“We know that on some nights there are people using the car parks to sleeping rough.

“Our cleaning teams are working hard to reduce the impact this has on our car park users and our housing team is continually working to reach out to people who are sleeping rough to try offer them help and alternatives.”
