Residents have voted in favour of works to improve the safety of a ‘dangerous’ junction in Gerrards Cross, after a four year battle by the town council to get the problems fixed.

Cllr Chris Brown, chair of Gerrards Cross Town Council, said the traffic lights near Tesco at the junction of Packhorse Road, Ethorpe Close and Station Road have caused chaos since 2011 because the crossing is “not fit for purpose”, particularly for people in wheelchairs.

Now that the go-ahead has been given, the improvement works will be made in two phases - phase one will be to remove the Station Road traffic lights, replace it with a pedestrian crossing to the north of the junction and remove the crossing to the north of the Tesco junction, outside Hamptons.

Phase two will make changes the Tesco junction itself, but the plan for the second phase will be dependent on the results of the first, which will go through a six-month trial period.

Out of 410 responses to a consultation by Bucks County Council on the planned work, 372 people voted in favour of implementing phase one of the project, which will be funded by Tesco.

Bucks County Council will pay for the resurfacing of the highways.

Cllr Brown thanked residents for their “positive response” to the consultation, but criticised the length of time it is taking to resolve the issues.

He said: “We share our residents’ frustration with the time it is taking to address the issues with the traffic lights and are driving hard for an early solution.

“Unfortunately, any changes are subject to the agreement of the Highways Authority (BCC) and to the required funding being available.”

Cllr Brown said the next step is the detailed planning and costing of the changes by Tesco and Bucks County Council, while “Gerrards Cross Town Council will continue to press for the implementation of Phase 1 as soon as possible.”

The work is expected to start in the second quarter of this year.
