A popular supermarket could be set to return to Amersham on the very site it vacated just over three weeks ago it was revealed today.

Iceland's Amersham store at 75 Sycamore Road closed on December 31 2015 with Chairman of Chiltern District Council Mimi Harker claiming the closure was "a huge loss to the town".

Last month a petition against the move was signed by leading business figures including Vee Bharakda, Chair of the Chiltern District Council Chamber of Commerce.

The site's developers, Angle Property, announced this afternoon that Iceland was one of a number of supermarkets they are speaking to in relation to the vacant units - as well as other retailers.

James Good, Director at Angle Property, said: "We continue to listen carefully to the feedback we have received from all involved and continue to talk to a number of possible retailers regarding the site, this includes Iceland as well as other possible food retailers.

"We are very much looking forward to receiving more feedback at the Amersham Action Group public consultation and information day on Saturday and hope to update residents further on the retailers we have been in discussion with as possible tenants within the proposed development.

"It remains our aim for this development to significantly and positively contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of Amersham.

"This is an exciting new opportunity that will enhance Amersham by replacing an unattractive, under-developed building with a new, contemporary retail and residential scheme."

Back in late Decembers, Iceland hinted that they were already looking for a return to the town.

A statement from the supermarket said: “Iceland has been trading in this location in Amersham since 1990, and we are proud to have been part of the local community for the last quarter of a century.

“We are grateful to our many loyal customers for their support over all these years and we hope that we may be able to return in the future if a suitable property becomes available.”

Plans for the redevelopment of the site - which includes two other retail outlets (Cargo and Chilton Watson Opticians) - would see the existing building replaced with two retail/restaurant units, and as many as 35 new flats above.

The proposal by Angle Property was received by Chiltern District Council on December 22.

The public consultation day - organised by the Amersham Action Group - takes place on Saturday January 30 from 10am to 3pm at Amersham Free Church, Woodside Road (HP6 6AJ).
