PRINCESS Anne stopped by at The Horse Trust in Speen to take a tour of the stables yesterday.

The Princess Royal, who is patron of the trust, braved the wind and rain to look around the stables which house 120 veteran horses. These include Dombey, a newly retired workhorse from Greater Manchester Police, and 40-year-old Big John - the oldest at the site.

The horse charity, which looks after veterans and also researches into horse diseases, held its AGM on the same day at the Home of Rest for Horses, in Slad Lane, Speen.

The Horse Trust moved to this site in 1971 and is the longest serving horse charity at 121-years-old.

Major General Sir Simon Cooper, outgoing chairman of the trust, said: "We could not be more delighted that Princess Anne has found the time to come here and look around the stables.

"Our most important contribution is to provide equine research. We give out postgraduate grants to vets on an annual basis looking to provide cures to the diseases which attack the horse world."

Susan Lewis, marketing manager at the trust, said: "It's such a momentous occasion for everybody associated with the trust. It is a true honour that Princess Anne has given so much time to us and shows her passion for horses."
