With summer just around the corner, there are plenty of walks around the scenic Chilterns countryside to enjoy in the warmer months.

National Trust property Hughenden Manor in High Wycombe is launching two new estate walks at the weekend, taking visitors through the beautiful woodlands at the one time home of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

With a launch event on Sunday, walkers can enjoy guided tours of both of the new walks.

Jessie Binns, learning and interpretation officer at Hughenden Manor, says: "We have tried to do two walks which really cover the different personalities of the estate."

At 12.30pm, there is an organised walk of the two-mile German Forest Walk, and at 3pm, one along the shorter, one-mile Woodcock Wood route.

Both the walks are stile free, but the German Forest route contains a couple of steep slopes.

Jessie says: "The Woodcock Walk is great for the less mobile, or families with pushchairs.

"It includes some lovely views, and takes people through one of Hughenden's loveliest areas of woodland, with its beech trees typical of the Chilterns."

The Woodland Walk also has a bench, where walkers can stop and enjoy the view across the Hughenden Valley and into the village.

Jessie continues: "The German Forest walk is very different. It is a unique feature in the Chilterns, as it is full of conifer trees found in the Black Forest.

"When Disraeli went to Germany, he fell in love with the forest, and wanted to recreate something similar here."

She adds: "There are lots of mysterious tree lined avenues to walk through, and it has a unusual feel to it."

During the day, there will also be information kiosks from Simply Walks and the Chiltern Conservation Board, handing out leaflets about walking in the Chilterns.

And there will also be gazebos in Hughenden's picnic area, for anyone wanting to bring food to eat alfresco.

Walkers who want to try the routes without a guide can buy new walk leaflets from the ticket office for £1. There is also an audio guide available for the German Forest walk, with information about the history of the wood. The Woodland Walk takes between 30 and 45 minutes, and the German Forest Walk takes around an hour. The walks at Hughenden Manor are free, with admission only paid for visits to the house and gardens.

The launch of the Woodland Walk and the German Forest Walk is on Sunday, June 3 from 12.30pm. For further information, telephone the Hughenden Manor Estate Office on 01494 755573.
