A Bucks therapy dog is to be recognised for his services to the county with a heroism award at a swanky London ceremony this weekend.

'Doug the Pug', who lives with his owner - Cate Archer - in Beaconsfield, will be given 'Most Heroic Hound Award' at The National Pet Show this weekend at London ExCeL.

Mrs Archer said: "We need to be happy with who and what we are in order to respect our own life and that of others.

"Doug works so hard to help those he works with achieve this.

"He hasn't been seeking out lost children from snow drifts on mountains, but it's great that our emotional and mental health is being regarded as important too."

The six-year-old pug works through the Saunderton-based charity Pets As Therapy and makes weekly visits to pupils at Chalfont St. Giles infant and junior schools and well as residents at Pratt House care home in Amersham.

Back in February Doug released a book - 'Doug the Pug - A Working Dog's Tale' - with a paw-printing event in Gerrards Cross.
