Supermarket chain Tesco has reassured customers after a number of cars were spotted with clamps on in their car park in Loudwater.

Photographs sent in by a reader on Tuesday morning show at least seven clamped cars in the store's car park on London Road, leaving some customers worried about parking there.

However, a Tesco spokesman has confirmed that the vehicles were not clamped by them, but by the DVLA for not having tax.

A number of cars across Loudwater - including on London Road and Kingsmead Road - have also been clamped, leaving drivers facing a £200 fee to get them released.

Tesco spokesman, Joe Chapman, said: “The clamping that occurred at our High Wycombe Loudwater store car park was carried out by the DVLA.

"We understand that this was due to a local car dealer leaving cars there which were untaxed and that a member of the public reported the incident to them.

“This activity was not carried out by Tesco and does not in any way relate to parking by our customers.”

The name of the car dealer involved has not yet been confirmed.

The tax on one of the vehicles - a Mini - ran out on March 26, according to the government's vehicle enquiry service.

Another car - a black Vauxhall - has been without tax since February 22.

A DVLA spokesman said that ten untaxed cars were clamped at Tesco.

He said: "Our national wheelclamping partner, NSL, as part of their day to day operations go to different areas of the country and can clamp any untaxed vehicles seen on the road - they can also clamp any untaxed vehicle that is parked on private land if the keeper has not declared it is off the road (SORN)."
