An artisan bakery in the Chalfonts officially makes the best bread in the Chilterns, as experts name their favourites having scoured the area for the loveliest loaf.

Rex Artisan Bakery in Little Chalfont was named as the venue with the most delightful dough, with bakers due to pick up an award from the Chiltern Society later this month.

Rex – which has a shop on the Chalfont parade and sells cakes, buns and sweets in cafes across south Bucks – was the overall winner as well as getting the gong for the central Chilterns area.

The winner for the north Chilterns was Jo’s Loaves, Luton and for the south Chilterns Burgers of Marlow.

As well as the latest prize, Rex won medals in the 2014 and 2015 World Bread Awards, was voted Bucks Best Artisan Bakery 2015 and their multiseed loaf was judged Best British Bread in the Great Farming Awards 2015.

The competition was launched by the society, which last year celebrated 50 years of promoting and protecting the Chilterns.
